How to Give Good Feedback to Your Designer

When you first begin working with a branding and design company, it can be a challenge to convey your vision in words. However, our simple 3-step process is designed to be interactive and put YOU in creative control! We know that your brand is important to you, so we do everything we can to make sure that it feels like the best representation of who you are and what your brand stands for.

It can be intimidating giving feedback to your designer, especially for people who don’t know much about art and design (after all, that’s why most people hire help!). However, there are a few simple things you can do to help get the best experience from your branding journey.

  • Communicate

The most important thing is to simply be responsive when updates are sent. Even something as simple as “I like version 1, I don’t like version 3” can be very helpful to us in identifying what your tastes and preferences are. More is always better! We would much rather have too much feedback than not enough. If you don’t tell us what you’re looking for, we won’t be able to make it for you.

  • Be ready for rough drafts

At the beginning of the process, we will often send multiple drafts or versions that may go in very different directions. These versions could be in very different color palates or use different imagery that you feel represents your business well. These initial drafts are often rough documents to give you an idea of what it would look like once it gets cleaned up and polished to become a finished product. Don’t be concerned if it seems like an unfinished image because it most likely is! In the interest of getting as many options to you as possible, we don’t want to waste your valuable time making four different finished versions when only one will be selected moving forward.

  • Identify specific elements

When you speak with us for the first time on your identity intake, we ask many questions about your business goals as well as your aesthetic preferences. If you have colors, fonts, or imagery that are important to you, this is the time to share it with us! We may not be able to incorporate every aspect of your preferences if it will make the logo too busy, but we will try to give you varied options to see what resonates most with you. Try to go through each version with a fine tooth comb and identify the overall impression as well as the details that move you to like or dislike each particular version. How are a few examples of questions you can ask yourself as you look through the sample drafts.

- How do you feel about the colors? Is the blue too dark? Does the purple look too red?

- How about the font? Is it too curly? Not curly enough? Too blocky? Too rounded?

- How about the imagery? Does it match your vision? Does it feel natural? Does it complement your business name and services?

Sometimes there are certain elements that you like in each version. We can easily combine multiple drafts into one based on your preferences. Perhaps the font of version A with the colors of version B? Or the imagery of version C with the colors of version A? Anything is possible!

  • Don’t be afraid to get on a call

It can be challenging to convey your thoughts via email. If you find that communicating via email is not yielding the results you want, don’t be afraid to ask for a conference call! We are always happy to talk over Zoom or Google Meet so we can talk and go over changes in real time via screen sharing. This can often be a great opportunity to revisit your preferences and adjust anything that is no longer working. Perhaps the original color scheme is not translating well to the overall design and you want to tweak a few things, or you want to see some different font options. We can often show you sample color palettes or fonts that we recommend in just a few minutes. Then you can make selections based on the samples and we can redo your drafts to include the new choices.

  • Just ask!

We have years of experience in bringing our client’s visions to life. If you have a specific look or visual in mind, make sure you mention that to our team during your identity intake. We will keep that in mind during every step of the process. If you have an idea for a different direction after seeing a few drafts that just aren’t captivating you, let us know and we will bring it to life for you!
